Sustainable Oilseed Processing for Rural Empowerment in Sennar

Implementing Authority:

Department of Food Processing Industries

Location:

  • 380 km south of Khartoum

  • 5 km north of Singa city

  • Sennar State, Sudan

Project Size: Medium-scale

Target Beneficiaries:

Approximately 2,000 farmers and their families living in 23 villages surrounding the project site. The total population in the target area is around 25,000 people.

Expected Benefits:

a. Reduction of post-harvest losses: All harvested oilseeds will be processed in the factory, minimizing losses after harvest.

b. Guaranteed market access: The factory will purchase all produced oilseeds at a reasonable price through contracts between the factory management and the farmers’ union.

c. Affordable, high-quality oil: The factory will produce high-quality edible oil. Due to the proximity of the factory, transportation costs will be low, allowing local communities easy access to high-quality oil at affordable prices.

d. Valuable by-products: The factory will also produce press cake (oilseed residue) as a secondary product. This by-product is a protein-rich animal feed, contributing to additional income streams and supporting local livestock farming.

e. Economic impact: According to the feasibility study, the factory will crush 50 tons of oilseeds per day. With an oil yield of 20%, this results in 10 tons (10,000 kg) of oil produced daily. If we assume the market price per kilogram is SDG 5,000 ($8.3), the gross daily income would be SDG 50,000,000 ($83,333).

Note: This is gross income. Operational costs, loan repayments, salaries, and management expenses will be deducted. However, the remaining profit can still significantly improve the livelihoods of farmers and support the financial needs of the “Kulna ElSudan” Association.

Project Duration: Approximately 13 months

Estimated Project Cost (in million USD):

Additional Project Information:

  • Available farmland: 1,000 hectares (23,000 feddans), owned by local farmers currently cultivating rain-fed crops.

  • Irrigation system: A pumping station exists, but the main and branch canals require repair to ensure efficient irrigation.
